This training manual begins with a general overview of the dangers of black carbon to health and the climate and the impact of the brick sector in Latin America. The manual provides a range of solutions for the brick industry to reduce emissions and improve air quality. These include fuel choice, kiln design and improved stacking and airflow techniques. The manual provides figures on the cost of investment, production capacity, types of fuel, energy consumption and first quality pieces produces for seven types of brick kilns: Down draft (Peru/Equador), Dome, Hoffman, Cedan, Mobile, VSBK. and Tunnel.

The Manual also gives an overview of relevant national environmental policies in Latin America for brick production. It discusses the challenges the brick sector faces and strategies to overcome these strategies.
