Refrigerants Australia

Refrigerants Australia is the peak organisation representing Australian refrigerant suppliers and users. It was originally established to formulate an industry response to the Montreal Protocol, which set out the need to phase-out ozone depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). Building on this base, the organisation has continued to develop and implement strategies to limit the emissions of all fluorocarbons refrigerants, and has been an active participant in the Kyoto Protocol process.

The organisation has developed a number of significant voluntary initiatives to minimise the emissions of refrigerants to the atmosphere, including training and certification programs, a ban on disposable containers and the establishment of a national product stewardship organisation, Refrigerant Reclaim Australia.

Refrigerants Australia believes the responsible use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) can produce environmental benefits by way of increased energy efficiency, an important consideration in terms of global climate protection. The industry is working on the development of low-global warming potential  refrigerants, which will make an enormous contribution to minimising the emissions of greenhouse gases from the airconditioning and refrigeration industry.

Refrigerants Australia is involved in the Coalition's HFC initiative.
