The Federal Ministry of Environment (FMENV) of Nigeria developed the project, the Rural Women Energy Security (RUWES), as part of its strategy to provide access to clean energy technologies and market skills to women.

The RUWES responds to a need to save lives, save the earth and improve the economy. The RUWES is targeted towards improving the value chain of the under-served rural woman who are usually off grid, energy poor and have the highest incidence of health-related issues from harmful energy practices.

The RUWES is an actor in the Household Energy and Urban Health initiatives.
