The activity's overall objective is to promote broader uptake of more climate-friendly alternatives to HFCs, particularly in developing countries. While one low-GWP alternative to HFCs in MACs (HFO-1234yf) is being implemented in Europe, Japan, and North America, no alternative is yet used in the identified country or region of the proposed project and HFO-1234yf systems have not yet been implemented anywhere using the secondary-loop designs to reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint.
This technology demonstration is expected to result in reductions of both HFCs and CO2 (from the lower energy consumption of new technologies), which will be monitored, quantified and reported. Reduced manufacturing and ownership cost of SL-MACs will encourage global implementation to phase-down high-GWP HFCs. The project specifically aims to:
- Test and validate the secondary-loop mobile air conditioning (SL-MAC) system designed to achieve energy-efficient operation in high ambient air temperatures, with significantly lower refrigerant leaks and carbon footprint when compared to existing direct expansion mobile air conditioners
- Disseminate information that will promote awareness and broad applicability of such technologies and the results of the demonstration project
