Dialogue on monitoring methane landfill emissions from space

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition hosted a dialogue on emerging opportunities to monitor methane emissions from super-emitting landfill sites using satellites.

The meeting was held on Thursday, 15 December from 14:00-15:00 Paris time.

During the meeting, scientists from SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research presented the capabilities of satellites, in particular TROPOMI in combination with GHG Sat, to observe methane emissions from super-emitting landfills and a pilot project that focuses on more in-depth observations at four major landfills. In phase 2 of the project, beginning in early 2023, the idea is to scale up the activity and look at many more landfills across the globe. The project wants to engage with NGOs, governments, local parties, and any stakeholders that are interested to reduce their waste emissions.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about tools to monitor methane emissions from landfills via satellites and to discuss best practices to lower those emissions. Likewise, there was a discussion on how to use the information to promote the diversion of organic waste from landfills.
