Because of its high energy content, natural gas (i.e methane) has been often endorses as a possible "bridging" fuel toward a low-carbon economy. However, it is a highly potent greenhouse gas, and leakages can occur at many stages of the natural gas supply chain, potentially discrediting methane as a green fuel. This report presents a comparison of some countries of interest: the US, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia, with a critical investigation of their national inventories and emphasis on the large discrepancies in losses reported across each of the gas segments.
