Two landmark reports last year, the IPCC's Global Warming of 1.5 ºC and UN Environemnt's 2018 Emissions Gap report, confirmed that meeting the Paris Agreement temperature goals, and preventing future climate catastrophes, cannot happen without fast action to reduce short-lived climate pollutants. In a few days, the Climate & Clean Air Coalition will kick off our ‘Action Programme to Address the 1.5 Degree Challenge’ that will give countries a platform and roadmap to fast track action on these pollutants over the next decade.
Our first Action Programme event will take place at the UNFCCC Africa Climate Week in Accra, Ghana. Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire, partner countries receiving support from our National Planning / SNAP Initiative, will present their plans to leverage short-lived climate pollutant mitigation actions to deliver on climate and development commitments and call on others in the region to follow their lead.
The Coalition is looking to enable further action in the region with an integrated assessment of air pollution and climate change in Africa. The 2-year assessment will provide much needed insight into emissions throughout the continent and the development benefits that integrated mitigation strategies would bring to the region. This work will be launched at the first ever Coalition Working Group meeting held on the African continent, in Nairobi, Kenya, 6-8 March.
We will continue to highlight the work of our partners in Africa and around the world, as we roll out the Action Programme in other regions. The hard work is only just beginning. Get ready for a busy and exciting year!
