Accra waste activities

Ongoing
started:
2013

As a member of the Coalition's Municipal Solid Waste Initiative city network, the city of Accra, Ghana has undertaken multiple initiatives to improve waste collection and separation practices, including:

  • Conducting a waste assessment
  • Developing a waste work plan

Progress & outcomes

As part of programmes under the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Initiative, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has partnered with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to develop and implement solid waste management strategies that potentially contribute to the reduction of Short-lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) and greenhouse gas emissions in the Accra City.

Preliminary scoping studies carried out in early 2013 through participatory consultations with key stakeholders resulted in the preparation of a draft work plan. The current plan is the finalized programme upon further discussions and appraisal by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
