The project, “Advancing the Clean Air, Health and Climate Integration Agenda in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Region,” is providing targeted support to the ASEAN community and individual member states to integrate air pollution and climate change actions into relevant institutions and policies.
This project is supported by the Coalition's Action Programme to Address the 1.5˚C Challenge, a programme developed by Coalition partners in response to the IPCC 1.5˚C Special Report which emphasized the need for early action on all climate forcing emissions, including short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), as part of the pathway to stay well below 2˚C.
This project aims to translate 25 clean air measures identified in the Climate and Clean Air Coalition report, “Air Pollution in Asia and the Pacific: Science-based Solutions,” into implementable actions for countries in the ASEAN region. Implementing these measures could help 1 billion people breathe cleaner air by 2030 and reduce global warming by a third of a degree Celsius by 2050. Other benefits would include positive impacts on crop yields, socio-economic development, and progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Through our implementing partners Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the UN Environment Programme, we are developing a mix of quantitative modelling and qualitative policy and institutional analysis that will help fill critical knowledge gaps about the multiple benefits of integrated climate and clean air solutions in ASEAN member states.

The work is led by the Philippines and will build on existing activities in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
