About

The Environmental Compliance Institute (ECI) is a non-profit organisation promoting sustainable societies in Africa by advancing good environmental governance and environmental rule of law.

ECI supports climate change and clean air interventions in Africa by:

  • Raising awareness about climate change and its impacts on the environment, health and livelihoods
  • Promoting the adoption and implementation of policies, legislation and practices that improve air quality, reduce energy use and limit greenhouse gas emissions, including short-lived climate pollutants

Activities

Over the past five years, ECI has been working with the UN Environment Programme and other stakeholders to implement projects in East Africa, including:

  • A regulatory toolkit for clean fuels and vehicles piloted in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda
  • A roadmap for a vehicle inspection and maintenance programme in Kenya and a roadmap for harmonising vehicle emission standards across East Africa
  • Technical support to the cities of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Kigali (Rwanda), Nairobi (Kenya) and Kampala (Uganda) to develop clean air action plans
  • Technical support to Rwanda (funded by the Coalition) to revise and develop emission standards for road vehicles, off-road mobile machinery and power plants
  • Developing strategies for implementing an HFC phase down in line with the Kigali Amendment
