In 2019 the Climate and Clean Air Coalition launched its scientific assessment on climate and clean air for Africa which aims to:

Determine how development in Africa can proceed at the same time as limiting air pollution and its negative impact on health, agriculture and the environment, and
Understand the potential to mitigate climate change in the near term, and its implications for adaptation to climate change in Africa.

This will be the third integrated air pollution and climate assessment by the Coalition, which will build on the experience of producing assessments in Latin America and the Caribbean and Asia Pacific.

Objectives

Through the Africa assessment the Coalition will develop a scientifically robust and policy-relevant integrated assessment with African stakeholders from 2019 to 2021. Results from the assessment will provide a framework for national and local actions and will underpin regional co-operation on measures to reduce near-term warming and air pollution impacts.

This assessment is particularly significant to the region, as emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) are relatively high due to the dependence on solid fuel for cooking, the largest controllable source of black carbon emissions, and the open dumping of waste, a major source of methane emissions.

This work will drive towards a tailored package of solutions for climate and clean air for the region which links effectively to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Africa Union Agenda 2063 and national level prioritized climate actions. The intergrated assesmnt process brings together technical experts from across the region to discuss possible solutions, taking into consideration the data, experience and local development priorities. The assessment needs political buy-in and support to be successful.

Get involved

We seek to have many different stakeholders engaged throughout the development and implementation of this assessment. This will include national governments in Africa, academic institutions in Africa and globally, international inter-governmental organisations, NGOs and regional economic blocs.
