Climate and development benefits of black carbon mitigation

ABOUT THE SIDE EVENT

The event aims to highlight the impacts of black carbon and co-pollutants on climate and health and provide greater clarity on the scientific rationale for countries to include black carbon and co-pollutants as a regulated (and measured) emission in national (and local) air quality regulations and standards. The panel of leading scientists and representatives from both developing and developed countries will discuss the importance of measuring black carbon emissions, share best practices and their experiences of black carbon mitigation, and highlight multiple benefits for health and sustainable development.

Including black carbon and co-pollutants in national plans will help the global of attainment of 0.6 degrees Celsius of avoided global warming from SLCPs. It would also help countries avoid choosing between near-term sustainable development priorities and long-term climate goals - they can and should achieve both.

ABOUT THE UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

The forty-sixth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 46) and  Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 46) as well as the third part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-3) will take place from 8 to 18 May 2017, in Bonn, Germany.
