Municipal solid waste (MSW) systems are one of the fastest-growing sources of methane emissions worldwide—a potent greenhouse gas with over 80 times the warming power of CO₂ over a 20-year period. Without urgent intervention, emissions from this sector are projected to rise dramatically, undermining global efforts to meet near-term climate targets. Yet the solutions to reduce these emissions are well-known, feasible, and often cost-effective.

The missing link? Finance.

Join us for a high-level public event that brings together leading climate finance experts, city officials, and institutions driving support for methane mitigation in the waste sector. This convening—co-hosted by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), C40 Cities, Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) and Global Methane Hub (GMH)—will dive deep into the practical and systemic challenges to financing methane reduction solutions in MSW systems.

Why Finance Is a Challenge

The Challenge: Despite the urgency, waste sector projects often struggle to access the scale and type of finance needed. Fragmented markets, weak data pipelines, and unclear revenue streams make investment difficult.

The Solution: We need fit-for-purpose financing mechanisms tailored to municipal contexts—from concessional capital and blended finance to results-based financing and climate bonds. Targeted data and risk reduction strategies can unlock significant flows of public and private capital.

The Action: This event will explore how cities and their partners are turning ambition into implementation: designing bankable projects, aligning climate outcomes with finance metrics, and building the enabling environments that de-risk methane mitigation investments.
