Scaling Solutions for Impact: Africa’s 11-Country Organic Waste Journey

Across Africa, cities are showing that organic waste is not just a problem — it is an opportunity for climate leadership, healthier communities, and green jobs. Over the past year, 11 countries in Africa have advanced organic waste management, strengthened city-level policies, and cut methane emissions. 

This initiative combined policy engagement, technical support, and on-the-ground pilots to demonstrate how upstream waste solutions, particularly zero waste approaches, can deliver climate, health, and livelihood benefits. 

The project advanced the implementation of zero waste and organic waste management solutions across 11 African countries, directly contributing to the global goal of achieving a 40% reduction in methane emissions by 2030 as outlined in the CCAC Coalition 2030 Strategy. It strengthened government commitment, fostered regional collaboration, and enhanced technical capacity for upstream waste interventions. Importantly, the project elevated grassroots and community-led approaches as vital pathways for methane reduction and sustainable development. 

This effort is funded by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition and implemented by Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA). The project was implemented through a network of national civil society partners who advanced zero waste and methane reduction efforts within their respective contexts.

Participants will engage with country leaders, community champions, and international partners to explore:

• Breakthrough solutions already making a difference.
• Challenges and innovations from the ground.
• Commitments to scale impact across Africa and globally.

These partners include: Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD) in Kenya; Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) in Ghana; Eco-Justice Ethiopia in Ethiopia; End Plastic Pollution in Uganda; Centre for Earth Works (CFEW) in Nigeria; CAD in Zimbabwe; Zero Waste Senegal (ZWS) in Senegal; Global Initiative for Environment and Reconciliation (GER) in Rwanda; Youth Exploring Solutions (YES) in Liberia; Front Commun pour la Protection de l'Environnement et des Espaces Protégés (FCPEEP) in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Zero Waste Skhirat (ZWS) in Morocco.
