Webinar: Latest Trends in Fossil Fuel Methane Management

Methane contributes approximately a third of the global temperature rise currently being experienced with around a third of these emissions coming from coal, oil and gas production. In addition to contributing to climate change, such emissions impact air quality that negatively affects public health and agricultural productivity. With methane also being a valuable energy resource such emissions can be captured, utilised and monetised, contributing to energy security and providing some of the lowest cost abatement options available.

The UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition is pleased to present the forthcoming Fossil Fuel Hub webinar. A series of short overviews will highlight the latest trends in methane management including the use of energy markets to drive change, the need for prioritisation in national planning and how supportive regulatory frameworks can be introduced to facilitate and ensure consistent application of reduction requirements. Leading governments, international organisations and methane practitioners will share their experience as part of a regular forward-looking series of webinar and discussion events within the CCAC's Fossil Fuel Hub which includes the launch of the Methane Regulator-to-Regulator (MR2R) Network.

We welcome all ministerial and regulator representatives from CCAC member and Global Methane Pledge countries along with ministry-affiliated companies and non-state partners including IGO’s, NGO’s and civil society. The provisional agenda includes:

Developing a methane focussed culture through key messages: Seeing is believing (CCAC / IMEO)

Latest Trends:
  • Reflections from New York and look ahead to COP30: Stepping stones to low-methane products; using markets as a lever for change (CCAC)

  • Towards a Latin America and Caribbean import standard and the importance of Communities of Practice (Gastón Siroit, Regional Director of the Methane Observatory (OEMLAC) and Technical Advisor, OLADE)

Prioritisation in National Planning:
  • Nigeria's experience of goal setting and ensuring intergovernmental department alignment to implement regulations (Ibrahim Illo, Senior Manager, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission)

  • Incorporating long term strategies into Angola's NDCs to empower national action and meet GMP commitment (Dr Marcilio Santos, CCAC Consultant)

Implementing Regulatory Controls:
  • Key elements of a potential regulatory structure: including compliance vs emission reporting (Lesley Feldman, Director - Research and Analysis, CATF)

  • Comparative regulatory approaches in the Permian Basin (Jon Goldstein, Associate Vice President - Energy Transition, EDF)
