Air quality improvement masks global cooling from CO₂ reductions under China’s carbon neutrality policies for half a century

Zhao, B., Wang, X., Wang, Y. et al. Nature Communications 17, 1914 (2026). Co-authored by Drew Shindell, CCAC Scientific Advisory Panel.

New modelling suggests that China’s air pollution controls could temporarily increase global warming by reducing cooling aerosols, partly offsetting the benefits of CO₂ reductions until around 2070. The findings highlight the importance of combining clean-air action with faster carbon neutrality, methane reductions and negative emissions.
