As an organisation whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of poor tribal communities in Odisha, India, ARASMIN works to protect biodiversity and the natural resources and ecosystem services on which these communities depend.

The organisation is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Wildlife Institute of India, and the UN Global Compact Network, and has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

ARASMIN's work to address the near-term climate change in its community includes:

  • Advocacy at the government level to minimize the use of diesel and petrol as well as the combustion of other fossil fuels
  • Distribution of 2,000 smokeless cookstoves and more than 400 solar lights to replace the use of charcoal and firewood
  • Encouraging the purchase fly-ash bricks from factories that have reduced the use of firewood for fuel
  • Stopping the use of tractors and open burning of crop stubble to reduce black carbon emissions
  • Promoting the adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices
