Carbon Containment Lab

The Carbon Containment Lab (CC Lab) is an independent nonprofit focused on accelerating the reduction of super pollutants as a critical, yet often under-addressed, component of achieving global net-zero targets. Through its Super Pollutants Program, CC Lab mobilizes carbon markets, procurement policies, and government action to unlock financing for proven mitigation technologies.

CC Lab’s work spans three key areas:

Mobilizing Investment: The Lab identifies high-impact, underfunded reduction solutions—such as HFC recovery and disposal, alternative cooling technologies, coal mine methane abatement, and mitigating black carbon emissions from shipping—and works to channel financing and policy attention toward their implementation.

Targeted Research and Development: CC Lab partners with leading scientific and engineering experts to address technological gaps in super pollutants mitigation, including advancing methods for ultra-low-concentration methane destruction, finding and piloting novel methane mitigation opportunities, and enabling alternative cooling technologies, and unlocking barriers to reclaiming and destroying HFCs.

Policy Advocacy and Capacity Building: The Lab supports the development and implementation of ambitious climate policies, including the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the U.S. American Innovation and Manufacturing Act. It also provides training and convenes stakeholders across sectors to build capacity in areas such as life cycle refrigerant management, procurement policy, and carbon markets.

CC Lab actively contributes to the work of the Coalition and supports its objectives. It has provided training on financing mechanisms for improved refrigerant lifecycle management, convened experts at Montreal Protocol events, spoke at the annual CCAC meeting on methane abatement opportunities, and participated in the 2024 Technical and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) on Lifecycle Refrigerant Management.
