Restrictions on sale of coal and wet wood for home burning

United Kingdom
2021 - 2070

Part of Britain’s Clean Air Strategy, this legislation aims to cut harmful pollution to human health in households by restricting the sale of coal and wet wood for home burning.

To achieve its objective, this legislation introduces the following measures:

  • People with log burners and open fires can still use them, but will be required to buy cleaner alternative fuels such as dry wood and manufactured solid fuels which produce less smoke;
  • Restrictions on the sale of small volumes of house coal and wet wood;
  • Strengthened regulation on manufactured solid fuel emissions; and
  • A new certification scheme.
