The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the unacceptable loss of thousands of lives, rapidly increasing unemployment, and staggering economic and social dislocation. As we seek to recover from this global tragedy it is not sufficient to simply build back, we must Build Back Better. As governments marshal massive economic stimulus efforts to mitigate the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 we much seize this unique opportunity to accelerate progress for efficient, climate friendly cooling for a more resilient and prosperous world.

To discuss how the Montreal Protocol community can support a build back better agenda, Japan, the Institute for Governance & Sustainabel Development, International Soal Alliance, and the CCAC Efficient Cooling Initiative convened a side event on the margins of the 42nd Open-Ended Working Group of the Montreal Protocol. During the event experts covered a number of important topics, including how cold chain is necessary to improve health resilience, reduce critical respiratory vulnerabilities, and protect medical supply and delivery. They will further discuss how ending enviornmentally harmful dumping of inefficient appliances is key to avoiding high energy bills for consumers and health providers during a time of economic hardships; how buyers clubs can generate and maintain jobs and promote access to the best available technologies; and evaluate how varying approaches to end-of-lifecycle HFC management impact global development and sustainability.
