The urgency, complexity and economic implications of GHG emission reductions demand strategic investment in science-based information for targeting emission reduction opportunities and tracking the efficacy of policies and actions. To help meet these information needs WMO and its partners have initiated the Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System.IG3IS approach combines atmospheric GHG concentration measurements with human-activity data in a modelling and analysis framework to help decision-makers take better-informed action to reduce emissions of GHG and pollutants that reduce air quality. This service is based on existing and successful measurement and analysis methods and use-cases for which the scientific and technical skill is proven or emerging. IG3IS is used as a common framework to ensure the consistency of methods and approaches between spatial (from facility to national) scales across the globe. With the user perspective in the heart of the initiative, it aims to expand the observational capacity for GHGs, extend it to the regional and urban domains, and develop the information systems and modelling frameworks to provide information about GHG emissions to society, including support to NDCs.
