To help realize LOW-M’s ambition, jurisdictions need easy access to information on available funding and financing tools that support adequate solid waste management (SWM) systems with methane mitigation.

With strategic planning and targeted investment, waste systems can develop utility-like business models that deliver environmental, economic and social benefits – including the creation of green jobs and better livelihoods for informal workers and community groups.

This guidance outlines financial and funding mechanisms across the waste value chain to support decision-makers shape effective financing strategies for mitigating methane emissions through improved waste management.

The Lowering Organic Waste Methane (LOW-M) initiative is a coalition of organisations working and collaborating on data, policies, technical assistance and finance solutions to subnational governments and and their national government counterparts to accelerate the delivery of the Global Methane Pledge and the Paris Agreement by cutting 1 million tonnes of annual methane emissions from the solid waste sector well before 2030. This will require unlocking up to US$10 billion in public and private investment across as many as 40 jurisdictions.
