Zero Waste Model: Dar es Salaam Case Study

Waste management is a significant environmental challenge in Tanzania, especially in rapidly growing cities like Dar es Salaam. Inadequate infrastructure leads to widespread dumping of solid waste, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from organic waste that decomposes in open dumps.

Dar es Salaam's exponential population growth from 83,844 in 1950 to 5,383,728 in 2022 has intensified the waste generation issue, with daily solid waste increasing from less than 2,000 tonnes in 1998 to over 4,600 tonnes in 2017, and a per capita generation rate of 0.85 kg/day, (NBS 2017). 

In response to these challenges, Nipe Fagio pioneered the Zero Waste system, first implemented in Bonyokwa in 2019, an administrative ward of Ilala district in Dar es Salaam. This model addresses high waste management costs and unreliable services through community-based segregation at source, cooperative-led waste collection, and decentralized waste management.

The Zero Waste system has directly and indirectly reached 40,000 people whereas Bonyokwa, with a population of 12,000, serves as a testing ground for scalable solutions applicable to broader urban contexts. Zero Waste model is a strategy that gradually reduces waste disposal through separate waste collection and a combination of reuse, recycling, organic waste recovery, and waste prevention measures.

The total number of people engaged in the Zero Waste Model in Bonyokwa is 12,000 from 2,998 households and the average waste generation per capita per day is 0.88kg which is an estimated waste generation of 10,560kg (10.56 tonnes) per day. The Wakusanya Taka Bonyokwa Cooperative locally collects 1738.44kg (1.74 tonnes) per day. Nipe Fagio's Zero Waste implementation then expanded to Arusha and Zanzibar in Tanzania, and supported the creation of the Africa Zero Waste Alliance, demonstrating a long-term commitment to sustainable waste management solutions.
