East Africa Regional Dialogues: "Methane mitigation ambitions in the livestock sector: Strengthening institutional capacities and building networks to enhance climate action"

-
Virtual

The regional dialogues will be conducted through a combination of questionnaires and virtual workshop sessions. The aim is to facilitate a discussion on climate action in livestock systems and to address technical and institutional issues related specifically to methane mitigation in the livestock sector, and to enhance regional collaboration and partnerships, with the following specific objectives:

  • Identify technical and institutional priorities at the national and regional level;
  • Identify the capacities and financing mechanisms required to develop and implement mitigation and adaptation policies and/or programs; and,
  • Strengthen coordination among countries and facilitate ongoing multisectoral dialogue to align mitigation efforts with other livestock sector-, national-, and regional development priorities.

Anticipated Outcomes

At the start of the dialogues, participants will be asked to share their vision and expectations for the consultation. The identification of a collective shared vision and set of expectations will inform the format of dialogues, but also the development of a mapping document that identifies priority action areas and potential options to increase methane mitigation ambitions in the livestock sector at the country and regional level. This report will be shared with participants after the completion of the dialogues to:

  • Summarize the consultation proceedings;
  • Identify country and regional priorities;
  • Describe opportunities to address these needs through South-South cooperation and/or regional organizations and research institutions; and,
  • Present recommendations to the appropriate country authorities for future consideration

The organizing committee also intends to hold a virtual follow-up dialogue in 2022 to reassess country and regional priorities and needs, and to continue to support efforts to increase climate ambitions in the livestock sector.

Participants

The regional dialogues will have the participation of national representatives from key ministries and institutions, NDC/NAP focal points, inventory compilers, livestock and agricultural research institutions, and the private sector from the following countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Representatives from regional partnership organizations and international research institutions will also be invited: AGNES, FANRPAN, IGAD, and ILRI.

This event includes three virtual sessions between 4-8 October.
