Enhancing NDCs with Waste Sector Methane Actions

(Paris)
Virtual

The webinar focused on mitigation opportunities in the organic waste management sector, showcasing practical options to reduce short-lived climate pollutants such as methane through improved waste handling and treatment practices. As part of the broader webinar series supporting the integration of SLCP mitigation into enhanced NDCs, this session highlighted the cost-benefit dynamics of key interventions and outline pathways for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). Country experiences from Latin America and West Africa provided real-world insights into implementation challenges and successes, while a range of tools and resources were introduced to help NDC planners and implementation partners effectively incorporate organic waste strategies into national climate commitments.

Quotes from the session

"Chile is proof that waste sector targets are not only possible, but powerful drivers of sustainable development. Integrating methane reduction into our NDCs is transforming our climate ambition into real action on the ground."
– Kevin Basoa Barraza, Ministry of the Environment, Chile

"In Liberia and across West Africa, communities are already feeling the impact of waste-driven methane emissions, [+ including through uncontrolled fires at landfills]. We must act now — with tools, partnerships, and financing — to build sustainable systems that deliver climate, livelihood and public health benefits."
– Darius Barrolle, Green Life, Liberia

"Methane mitigation in the waste sector is one of the fastest, most affordable ways to cool the planet — and we have the solutions in hand. Now is the time for countries to embed these solutions into their national climate strategies."
– Carolina Urmeneta, Global Methane Hub

"Taking action to reduce methane action in the waste sector is not just good for the climate — it protects public health, creates employment, and drives economic opportunity. The co-benefits are too significant to ignore."
Donovan Storey, Waste and Climate Expert, CCAC Secretariat
