Implementing the Global Methane Pledge – National Planning and Policies (LAC-SE015)

The launch of the Global Methane Pledge at COP26 by US President Biden and EC President Von der Leyen was a watershed moment that elevated methane onto the global stage. The over 110 countries joining the Pledge have committed to collectively cut global anthropogenic methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels, an action that would put the world on path to limit warming to 1.5C.

This side event will explore untapped opportunities and shed light on progress made toward the Pledge, including the development of national methane roadmaps, examples of methane targets set in NDC and national policies in the LAC region, as well as private sector engagement. Presentations will cover:

  • Chile: National organic waste strategy (Camila Labarca Wyneken, Head of Mitigation and Transparency Department, Climate Change Division, Ministry of the Environment)
  • Dominican Republic: national methane roadmap (Luz Alcantara, Head of Mitigation, National Council of Climate Change)
  • Mexico: methane emissions in the oil and gas sector (Claudia Octaviano, General Coordinator for Climate Change Mitigation, INECC)
  • Global Methane Hub: opportunities for collaboration on methane reductions (Carolina Urmeneta, Director for Circular Economy)

The event will take place at the Garden Terrace room at LACCW. It will also be streamed (see below.)
