Moving from the Global Methane Pledge to Regulatory Action: Launch Event

-
(New York)

Fossil fuel operations globally are the second largest contributor to anthropogenic methane emissions but also have a high mitigation potential from existing low-cost abatement technologies. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) has been providing fossil fuel policy and regulatory support to developing country partners since 2013, with notable successes in countries like Nigeria, Iraq, and Colombia. Demand for this support has increased since over 155 countries signed on to the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) and the CCAC has directly engaged developing country partners on fossil fuel methane emissions as a priority area. This has been supported by new data transparency tools and trade regulations which have incentivised methane reductions from the fossil fuel sector and increased the need to support countries in meeting methane reduction targets. Plugging policy and regulatory gaps is an urgent need and one that the CCAC and its partners, like Clean Air Task Force, the International Energy Agency, and the United Nations Environment Programme, among others, can immediately address. This includes capacity gaps, to support countries in developing sufficient regulatory capacity for effective action. The FFRP will not provide funding or direct support to private sector stakeholders in the fossil fuel sector, or provide funding support which may result in new or extended fossil fuel operations.

This event will showcase the launch of a new program, the CCAC Fossil Fuel Regulatory Program, implemented by Clean Air Task Force. This program will support up to 20 countries from 2024 to 2027, and is designed to rapidly respond to the growing global demand for regulatory support for fossil fuel methane mitigation.
