Invest in climate action for Health: cut emissions, clean our air, save lives. 

Room 1. Official UNFCCC event, organised by the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization. 

This event will present key health initiatives and commitments from the United Nations Climate Action Summit (UNCAS) to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, and the role the climate-health nexus plays in driving ambition and accelerating implementation to achieve global climate goals. Special attention will be given to concrete ongoing actions to save lives, cut carbon emissions, clean our air; and increase investment. The event is organized in collaboration with the Ministries of Health from Chile and Spain, CCAC, WMO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNOHCHR.

Strengthening climate promises: near-term mitigation via joint action on NDC provisions & air quality

Room 1. Official UNFCCC event, organised by IASS, Nigeria, EDF, and the CCAC.

Global mitigation commitments are far from being sufficient, and countries are required to update their NDC in 2020.  In this side event we discuss the potential for integrated action on air quality and climate to ratchet up climate mitigation efforts and provide further mitigation contributions? How can inclusion of short-lived climate forcing pollutants (SLCPs) such as methane and black carbon in climate plans benefit near-term climate, air quality, and health? This event showcases activities of national as well as nongovernmental actors that tackle both climate and air quality challenges.

Agri-Food Roundtable on “Advancing Climate Action on Resilient and Sustainable Food Value Chains for 1.5C World” 

Room: San Pedro de Atacama. Marrakech Partnership Event. Organized by the Global Resilience Partnership and FAO with A2R

The purpose of the event is to increase the ambition for climate action in agriculture and food value chains to deliver inclusive, resilient and sustainable food systems. It has three objectives to: 1) Strengthen the awareness on the climate actions ongoing and needed to build climate-resilient agriculture and food value chains, including initiatives launched at UNCAS; 2) Demonstrate how these actions are led and benefit smallholder farmers and communities living in countries most impacted by climate change, especially in Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States; 3) Identify the main challenges and opportunities to take these actions to scale, and how they can be tracked.

Dialogue Session: What are the most effective ways to integrate SLCPs into climate policy?

Blue Zone - Hall 6, IASS Co-Creative Reflection and Dialogue Space (across from the WWF Pavilion). Organized by IASS

This session, as part of the ‘IASS Co-Creative Reflection and Dialogue Space’, aims to foster dialogue between stakeholders interested in integrating Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) into climate policy, for example Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The session will discuss critical questions such as: Looking at specific sectors, i.e. agriculture, what political, legal or technical processes need to be targeted? What are the technical and political challenges? What integration strategies are transferrable to other country contexts? What do you have to consider when setting an extra SLCPs targets, e.g. on Black Carbon? 

The format aims to provide room for exchange, where effective strategies and new ideas can emerge. Rather than presenting outcomes, we reflect together on potential solutions. The session will be held under Chatham House rules.

Stronger Ambition, Further Action for Climate and Air Pollution

Korea Pavilion.  

Climate change and air pollution are similar in that they are both by-products of rapid industrialization and fossil fuel combustion. However, while the effects of climate change take place over the longer term, the threats of air pollution are felt immediately, thus demanding a more urgent response. This event will focus on the co-benefits of tackling climate change and air pollution to build stronger partnerships for tackling both challenges. This will require comprehensive actions in tandem with the energy sector, but most of all greater ambitions to combat air pollution and climate change.

Furthermore, the event will discuss pathways to accelerate the transformational change needed to maximize the contribution of the land use sector towards a climate neutral future in 2050.

Achieving a 2030 Deadline to Comprehensively Reduce SLCPs: Methane, Black Carbon and HFCs

Since 2012, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition has worked with its Partners to illustrate how and why countries have begun addressing climate and air pollution as an integrated issue and achieve reductions of all climate pollutants. In this side event the speakers will highlight good practices from countries around the world and tools and methodologies that countries can use today to harmonize implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement.

High-level circular economy roundtable: Cities and buildings as agents of climate action

Three quarters of resource-use and greenhouse gas emissions already come from cities, and trends in urbanization, motorization, population and economic growth will further drive up these numbers if we don’t get smarter and more sustainable in the way we live, consume, travel, and produce. This session will look at how circular economy principles can be applied in the built environment  to drive climate action. The role of cities, buildings, and other key actors as circular economy agents will be discussed.

Launch of the Fluorocarbons Life Cycle Management Partnership

The demands of fluorocarbons as refrigerants in the cooling sector is rapidly increasing. It is important to address emissions of fluorocarbons throughout the life-cycle from production of refrigerants to leakage in use of equipment to discharge of fluorocarbons to the air at disposal. As such, promoting the life cycle management of fluorocarbons will significantly reduce emissions and contribute to mitigating climate change and ozone depletion through introducing sound policies and technologies as well as building relevant infrastructure. We must not miss this opportunity to accelerate greater emissions reduction. Japan plans to launch this new initiative on life-cycle management of fluorocarbons during the UNFCCC COP25. The initiative will facilitate concrete actions and innovation and collaboration among governments, the private sectors, and international institutions for our mutual benefits to strengthen the life-cycle management of fluorocarbons, while collaborating with existing activities and frameworks.

This side-event will discuss India’s efforts for air pollution control, which also provide co-benefits of reducing Short-Lived Climate Pollutants and regional scale climate change. It will discuss India's key initaitvies for air quality improvement, ways to strengthen India's National Clean Air Programme, the benefits of integrating cliamte and air quality policies, lessons learned from similar efforts, and the mechanisms available for an integrated approach.

Advancing climate action in agriculture and food

Room 3, Hall 4. Official UNFCCC event, organised by New Zealand, CAITE, and the CCAC.

The first part of this event is the launch of a new paper by WRI, Oxfam, and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition that promotes ambitious and directed inclusion of agriculture and food systems in enhanced NDCs. The paper aims to help countries think through the process of enhancing their NDCs to include strengthened actions in the agriculture sector, including short-lived climate pollutant commitments. The second part of the event showcases examples from a range of developing countries that demonstrate how more ambitious action across agriculture and food systems can help achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal to address climate change in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty.
