Unlocking Climate Finance and Action for Livestock

The livestock sector plays a critical role in both climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, it remains underfunded in climate finance, receiving just a fraction of the total allocated to agriculture.

Some barriers to attracting finance to the livestock sector include a 1) limited understanding of low-cost opportunities to mitigate GHG emissions from livestock production systems, 2) inadequate capacity for data collection, 3) lack of technical expertise in livestock modeling and scenario development, and 4) misalignment between livestock technical knowledge and the development of national climate strategies

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) are are pleased to host this workshop and reception to outline key policy levers that national policymakers can employ to integrate livestock into climate strategies, thereby unlocking climate finance and achieving sustainable development goals.

Key Outcomes

This workshop and reception will have four key outcomes:

  • Outline available solutions and policy frameworks in your regional context.
  • Identify resources for implementation, including NDC support, livestock masterplan development, and pilots projects.
  • Overcome implementation barriers, including MRV systems to track progress on national and project-level results
  • Discuss key challenges for livestock adaptation and mitigation with likeminded colleagues from around the world.
