Image This September, Medellín turned its annual marathon into a powerful call for clean air. On the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, more than 27,000 runners filled the city’s streets under the banner of #Racing4Air, transforming the race into a global platform for action on air pollution and climate change. Billboards, banners, and even Medellín’s iconic flower mascot carried the message, while athletes from over 40 countries—including Vincent Hughes from the CCAC Secretariat—ran to spotlight the urgent need for healthier, livable cities. The marathon also highlighted Medellín’s own clean air journey. Once one of Latin America’s most polluted cities, Medellín has cut fine particle pollution by nearly 40 percent through investments in public transport, green corridors, and stronger air quality enforcement. Local leadership, innovation, and persistence have turned the city into a global model of how endurance and collaboration can deliver cleaner air. The Medellín Marathon is proof that progress is possible when communities and leaders run together toward the same goal.Read more Annual Report StoriesTransforming Transport for a Cleaner FutureThe transport sector is one of the fastest-growing sources of emissions worldwide—but also one of the greatest opportunities for action. This flagship video captures progress across the Caribbean and Pacific through inspiring interviews and on-the-ground stories from our country visits. From home composting to large-scale organics diversion, the program is helping communities transform waste into solutions for people and the planet. Cameroon raises ambition on agricultural methane reductionsCameroon has launched a new project to cut methane emissions from rice production and livestock, part of its goal to reduce methane by 35% by 2030. Led by the Ministry of Environment with support from the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, the initiative aligns with national climate commitments and is expected to attract high-level investment in agriculture and related sectors. The project will develop Tier 2 inventories, build farmer capacity, and identify mitigation options to inform updated climate plans—unlocking co-benefits for food security, health, and sustainable development.Read more UNEP’s IMEO supports methane mitigation in NigeriaUNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) hosted a workshop in Paris to support Nigeria in strengthening methane regulations, focusing on Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0). The workshop brought together representatives from Nigerian ministries, regulators, and the National Petroleum Corporation, and is part of an EU-funded project—implemented by IMEO with the Government of Nigeria—aimed at producing the country’s first multi-sector methane emissions study and advancing mitigation efforts.Ministers Explore Strategies to Cut Waste Methane in Latin America and the CaribbeanOn 1 October 2025 in Lima, Peru, a ministerial side event highlighted the urgent need for Latin America and the Caribbean to move from end-of-pipe waste management toward integrated strategies that prioritize prevention, reuse, and safe disposal of organic waste. Ministers and delegates discussed the Regional Cooperation Programme for the Reduction of Methane Emissions from Waste and the Closure of Dumpsites, developed with support from UNEP and the CCAC, which promotes circular economy approaches, progressive closure of dumpsites, and investments in resilient waste infrastructure. The session provided a platform to share regional successes, identify collaborative opportunities, and accelerate methane reductions while advancing public health, environmental justice, and sustainable economic growth.Read more about the event Methane: the emergency brake for climate heatingA new report from CCAG shows why tackling methane is the fastest and most effective way to slow dangerous climate heating. While CO₂ reductions remain essential, methane—over 80 times more powerful than CO₂ in the near term—accounts for nearly a third of the warming already experienced. The report highlights proven, low-cost solutions across energy, agriculture, and waste, and calls for urgent political action to unlock powerful co-benefits for health, food security, and economic resilience.Read the reportNew Investment Roadmap Charts Path for Digital Solutions for Livestock Methane ReductionLivestock Data for Decisions (LD4D) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) have launched the Investment Roadmap for Digital Services for Livestock Methane, a guide to mobilizing digital tools that boost livestock productivity while cutting greenhouse gas emissions in low- and middle-income countries. The roadmap outlines four strategic pathways—including building digital infrastructure, integrating services into national policies, strengthening livestock data ecosystems, and leveraging private sector investment—to overcome data gaps and enable targeted methane reductions. To explore how these strategies can be put into action, join the webinar Turning Roadmaps into Reality: Digital Services for Livestock Methane Reduction in LMICs on 30 October 2025. Malaysia and ASEAN Advance Regional Methane Mitigation with Korea PartnershipMalaysia officially launched the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) project in July 2025, kicking off a USD 20 million, three-year initiative across nine ASEAN Member States to reduce methane emissions through policy, measurement, mitigation projects, and regional collaboration. Funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund and implemented by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the project builds on Malaysia’s Nationally Determined Contribution and the Global Methane Pledge to drive climate action and sustainable development. In September, GGGI hosted the Second AKCMM Regional Workshop in Seoul, bringing together government officials, international organizations, and methane experts to exchange best practices, review draft outputs like the ASEAN Methane Reduction Roadmap, and explore technology-based solutions in agriculture, livestock, and waste management. The workshop included site visits to wastewater recovery and biogas facilities, demonstrating innovative approaches to methane management while strengthening regional cooperation and capacity for effective climate action.Read more about the projects Media DigestMethane leak at Darwin LNG plant kept secret from publicPublished by ABC Australia, September 1Investigative coverage from the Australian public broadcaster reveals that a methane leak at the Darwin LNG facility was withheld from public disclosure for days, sparking debate over transparency in fossil fuel operations. (2025) (Co-authored by the SAP: Lisa Emberson)Ground-level ozone (O₃) and water stress are key factors limiting wheat yields in India, with their effects closely linked through stomatal conductance. Modeling of older and modern wheat cultivars suggests that O₃ may continue to reduce the productivity benefits of high-yield, irrigated varieties under current and future climate and emission scenarios.
