SPECIAL UPDATE: OUR WORK DURING COVID-19

Dear partners, colleagues,

We hope you are staying safe and healthy during these extraordinary times. At the Climate and Clean Air Coalition Secretariat, we are working to ensure our regular activities continue to the best degree possible, while ensuring the well-being of our staff and partners.

  • All staff are working from home and can be accessed via regular means of communication.
  • In-person meetings and other scheduled events will now take place online to the extent possible.
  • Our Scientific Advisory Panel is looking into new research coming from the event to help us understand how we can adapt our work going forward. (We will share the results of this exercise once available.)
  • We are launching a series of CCAC webinars to keep partners informed about the progress in our different activities. See the schedule.

The social and environmental impacts of COVID-19 are offering important lessons that are relevant to our work and that highlight the importance of achieving our climate and clean air goals. Preliminary studies from the frontlines show that the health impacts from air pollution—including diabetes and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases—increases vulnerability to COVID-19.

The responses to COVID-19 have proven that behavioural change is possible in the face of a crisis. The temporary shutdown of economies around the world has shown how rapidly air quality can improve when polluting sources are reduced. This is not a sustainable solution, of course, but we believe this experience can drive us during this “decade of delivery”. We will be consulting with partners to determine how we can adapt our work and leverage our strengths to address the climate and clean air crises in ways that ensure economic stability, societal wellbeing, and sustainable development.

As the situation is changing, we will continue to provide updates in the coming days and weeks to reflect our latest efforts to respond and adapt to the situation.

Bridging the gap in climate finance: The untapped potential of investing in short-lived climate pollutant mitigation

To access climate finance, projects must prove they will mitigate the effects of climate change and deliver a return on investment. Together with partners EIB and World Bank, we are helping developing countries get their green projects investment-ready.

Mongolia increases climate change ambition with actions that improve air quality and human health

Mongolia’s revised Nationally Determined Contribution commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 22.7% in 2030. Achieving this would also reduce emissions of many air pollutants and short-lived climate pollutants.

Ground-breaking research, supported by the Coalition, reveals that 2% of oil and gas platforms are behind 20% of #methane emissions in the Gulf of Mexico. These findings underline the opportunity for quick, targeted reductions in the sector.

NASA releases first 3D volumetric visualisation of methane in our atmosphere

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has produced a new 3-dimensional portrait of methane concentrations that shows the diversity of sources on the ground and the behaviour of the gas as it moves through the atmosphere.
