Djibouti Breadcrumb Home Our Partners Djibouti The Republic of Djibouti joined join the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in 2025. Through its Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Djibouti has endorsed the CCAC Framework and Strategy 2030, committing to concrete action to reduce short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) including black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Djibouti has expressed particular interest in advancing action across heavy-duty diesel vehicles and engines, municipal solid waste, household cooking and heating, agriculture, and national SLCP planning (SNAP), while also linking SLCP reductions directly to improved public health outcomes.Djibouti has already developed and implemented several relevant strategies and programs that align with its SLCP priorities and broader climate goals. These include three National Communications under the UNFCCC, a National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA), a comprehensive National Climate Change Strategy, technology needs assessments for both adaptation and mitigation, and two Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Its second NDC (2021) strengthened ambitions on low-carbon and climate-resilient development, highlighting mitigation measures in waste management, transport modernization, and energy efficiency, all of which offer direct pathways to SLCP reductions. Djibouti is also actively improving its national air quality governance framework, laying the groundwork for integrating SLCP targets into broader climate and public health policies.Through its partnership with the CCAC, Djibouti seeks technical support, peer collaboration, and access to targeted initiatives to accelerate reductions in methane from waste, black carbon from diesel and household energy, and HFCs through cleaner cooling strategies. By embedding SLCP action into national development and health priorities, Djibouti aims to secure immediate local benefits—such as cleaner air and reduced respiratory disease—while contributing to global efforts to slow near-term warming and fulfill the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
