Guatemala

CCAC Partner since
2023

Guatemala became a State Partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in 2023, joining the global effort to cut short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) such as methane, black carbon, tropospheric ozone, and HFCs. By endorsing the CCAC Framework and its Strategy 2030, Guatemala has committed to advancing integrated action across key sectors, including agriculture, waste, transport, and heavy-duty vehicles. While Guatemala has not yet ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, it continues to prioritize laying the groundwork for future HFC management through national policies and capacity building.

Guatemala is actively working with the CCAC on several initiatives to reduce SLCPs and strengthen national climate and air quality strategies. It is currently developing its first National SLCP Action Plan with CCAC support, which will mainstream SLCP mitigation into existing policies and establish a dedicated methane roadmap. Through earlier CCAC-backed projects, Guatemala has strengthened its waste sector management to curb methane emissions from landfills and advanced a market transformation program for improved cookstoves, reducing black carbon and improving household air quality. In the transport sector, Guatemala has engaged in the CCAC’s Green Freight Programme to retrofit and modernize heavy-duty vehicles, cutting emissions of diesel-related black carbon and NOₓ.

By leveraging technical assistance and knowledge exchange through the CCAC, Guatemala is building robust national frameworks to reduce SLCPs, enhance monitoring systems, and deliver immediate health and climate benefits. This partnership underscores Guatemala’s commitment to sustainable development and clean air, helping position the country as an emerging leader on SLCP action in Central America.
