Uzbekistan CCAC

Uzbekistan, Republic of

CCAC Partner since
2024

The Republic of Uzbekistan has formally joined the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) as a State Partner in 2024, fully endorsing the Coalition’s Framework and its Strategy 2030.

By joining, Uzbekistan commits to taking meaningful action to reduce short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), including methane, black carbon, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), in alignment with its broader environmental and climate goals.

Uzbekistan has identified several priority areas where it seeks to advance SLCP mitigation and strengthen near-term climate action. These include developing a robust National Plan to reduce SLCPs, as well as targeted interventions across key emitting sectors. In agriculture, the focus is on farming practices that reduce methane and black carbon. In the transport sector, Uzbekistan aims to address emissions from heavy-duty vehicles by improving fuel quality and promoting cleaner technologies.

The country is also looking to reduce emissions from energy production, particularly from thermal power plants, and in the oil and gas sector, with emphasis on minimizing methane leaks during gas transportation. Additionally, Uzbekistan has highlighted the need to tackle methane from waste landfills and to enhance energy efficiency and refrigerant management in storage facilities equipped with cooling systems, aligning with best practices on HFC phase-down and climate-friendly cooling.

Uzbekistan is already advancing work consistent with SLCP mitigation. The country is implementing a national methane inventory process under its enhanced climate reporting obligations, and is exploring methane abatement opportunities in its oil and gas operations through multilateral partnerships.

In the waste sector, Uzbekistan is modernizing landfill operations and piloting methane capture systems as part of broader environmental reforms. Through its planned partnership with the CCAC, Uzbekistan seeks technical and policy support to integrate SLCP objectives into national climate strategies, build institutional and technical capacity, and accelerate implementation of targeted measures across priority sectors—thereby delivering immediate health, agricultural, and climate benefits.
