Chile is now preparing its long-term climate strategy to support the global Paris Agreement temperature goals and is looking to incorporate measures to mitigate black carbon that can link its local air quality and global climate actions. To support this objective, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition is helping Chile’s Ministry of Environment to develop a proposed section on black carbon for the strategy. This project is funded by the Coalition's Action Programme to Address the 1.5˚C Challenge, a programme developed by Coalition partners in response to the IPCC Special Report on 1.5˚C Global Warming which emphasizes the need for early action on all climate forcing emissions, including short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), as part of the pathway to stay well below 2˚C. ObjectivesThe main objective of this project is to deliver are developing a black carbon inventory for the period of 1990-2018 and preparing the inclusion of the inventory and data in Chile’s fourth Biennial Update Report to the UNFCCC and National Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Completed activitiesActivities developed: Black Carbon inventory updated (time series 1990-2018): The outcome of this activity will be a more robust methodology for black carbon inventory and an alignment with the greenhouse gas inventory process. The process will strengthen the collaboration between the Climate Change and the Air Quality teams within the Ministry of Environment. Inclusion of further atmospheric pollutants (such as PM2.5) will also be considered as part of this process. The black carbon inventory has been included as Annex #5 of the Fourth Biennal Update Report (BUR) of Chile. Proposal of Black carbon component for the long term climate strategy of Chile: This work will involve coordination with the Air Quality Division to develop a long-term vision on air quality and the mitigation of clack carbon in Chile, an evaluation of the impacts for greenhouse gas reduction, and an analysis of the impacts of long-term policies for air quality, and include measures to mitigate black carbon as part of sectoral plans Related documents Reports, Case Studies & Assessments 2021 Carbono Negro en la Estrategia Climatica de Largo Plazo - Chile Download Download CN_ECLP_1105.pdf es Added on: 11 May, 2021 Reports, Case Studies & Assessments 2021 Chile - National Inventory of Black Carbon (time series 1990-2018) Download Download INCN_2020 - Chile.pdf es Added on: 11 May, 2021
