Description

This project responds to the request by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to develop a SLCP strategy and enhanced monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for the coal mining sub-sector. This will be accompanied by workshops and training on mitigating SLCPs across the sub-sector.
Through the development of Kazakhstan’s SLCP strategy for the coal mining sub-sector, this project is expected to strengthen the institutional capacity of the government with SLCP mitigation forecasts, vulnerability assessments, and recommend mitigation measures tailored to the unique socioeconomic, legal, and technical contexts influencing Kazakhstan's practices.
This project will support the Government of Kazakhstan to achieving its commitment under the Global Methane Pledge, while contributing to public health and economic benefits through improved air quality and reduced environmental pollution.

Expected results

The project will deliver the following outputs and outcomes:

Outcome 1: The Government of Kazakhstan adopts an enhanced MRV system for the coal mining sub-sector by the end of the project or soon after.

Outcome 2: The Government of Kazakhstan increases its capacity to assess and reduce SLCPs from coal mining by the end of the project or soon after.

Outcome 3: The Government of Kazakhstan endorses a SLCP mitigation sub-strategy or enhanced regulatory framework for coal mining sector by the end of the project or soon after.
