Rationale

Nigeria faces high population growth and urbanisation rates and increasing waste generation, necessitating urgent interventions.

Methane emissions contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, which poses respiratory health risks. Methane capture and utilisation offer potential revenue streams through biogas and methanol production, aligning with Nigeria’s economic diversification goals.

This project aims to mitigate methane emissions from waste dumpsites in Nigeria, in response to the urgent call by Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, and NESREA. The project will utilise satellite imagery and ground assessments to develop a standardised methane emissions monitoring framework.

Objectives

  • Enable the Government of Nigeria to endorse a strategy for methane emissions mitigation from waste dumps nationwide.
  • Enable the Government of Nigeria to endorse a project pipeline for methane mitigation from waste dumps.
  • Submit a funding proposal for at least one identified project within 6 months of completing the pipeline.

Activities

To achieve these objectives, the project will:

  • Conduct a nationwide assessment and inventory of waste dumpsites, identifying key emissions sources and mitigation potential.
  • Develop a detailed project pipeline with 8-10 high-impact project ideas, each with clearly defined outcomes, implementing entities, stakeholders, timelines, and financing strategies.
  • Facilitate the development of a funding proposal for one of the high-priority projects identified in the pipeline. This proposal will be grounded in the detailed assessments, data, and stakeholder consultations conducted throughout the project.
