The agriculture sector is the largest contributor with 12,86 Mt and the waste sector contributes to about 4,44 Mt.Waste management, particularly organic waste, is a major issue in Senegal. With this in mind, Senegal has ratified several international conventions on pollution from waste and persistent organic pollutants. Senegal's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), under the Paris Agreement, have identified waste management as a priority sector with a high potential for reducing GHG and other pollutants. The country intends to reduce its overall emissions by 7% by 2030, and by 29% over the same period if external assistance is provided. For the waste sector, Senegal’s emissions reduction intentions are set at 11% until 2030 and up to 65% if adequate external funding can be provided. ObjectivesThis project aims to:Enable the Government of Senegal to endorse a national integrated organic waste management strategy by the end of the project or soon after.Increase the capacity of the Government of Senegal to assess and implement SLCP mitigation measures.Enable the Government of Senegal to adopts an enhanced regulatory framework for SLCPs in organic waste management by the end of the project or soon after. Enhance the Government of Senegal's GHG and SLCP monitoring, reporting, and verification systems for the organic waste sector. ActivitiesTo achieve these objectives the project will:Formulate the national organic waste management strategy a thorough literature review, analysing existing policies, revising national commitments, developing a comprehensive SLCP emission inventory, and co-developing mitigation scenarios with local stakeholders.Engage local communities, including officials and stakeholders at every level.Update and formulate laws and policies to be integrated into the national organic waste management strategy. This will be based on a review and analysis of existing government-endorsed policies. Deliver an improved GHG and SLCP MRV system for organic waste management to Senegal, informed by stakeholder input and regulatory analysis.Project Reference: [SN-24-002] Senegal - Develop a National Organic Waste Management Strategy targeting short-lived climate pollutants
