Air pollution, defined as the modification of the natural composition of the atmosphere by any chemical, physical or biological substance, can have important impacts on the environment, climate and ecosystems, as well as on human health and well-being. In the recent years, the multiple benefits of tackling air pollution, climate change and human health issues together have been highlighted and promoted. Recent research from the Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa shows that improved air quality  in Africa can have significant health benefits, and can also contribute to combating desertification and thus enhance food security.

The 12th July 2024 was the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms, in the commemoration, it is important to make the obvious link to air pollution as dust and sandstorms often account for the largest percentage of particulate matter globally and particularly in the Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern regions of Africa.
