Hoja de Ruta Metano Costa Rica CCAC

This report corresponds to the fifth product of the project aimed at building a mitigation roadmap for SLCPs, focused on methane, with a development-compatible approach. This report highlights the results of the implementation paths of the sectoral mitigation strategies, an initiative aimed at identifying and executing effective strategies to reduce methane emissions.

Moreover, it analyses how these mitigation actions can contribute to human development and the economic dynamism of Costa Rica. This report demonstrates that the effectiveness of Costa Rica's mitigation strategy depends on its focus on specific subsectors that are the major contributors to methane emissions.

Detailed planning and focus on high-impact areas are essential to achieve a significant reduction in national methane emissions. This approach allows not only for a positive environmental impact but also guides towards sustainable and responsible development, aligning with global climate change mitigation goals.

The implementation path, which integrates monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), is essential for establishing a structured and evidence-based framework. Its purpose is to plan and execute mitigation actions efficiently, adapting to the country's specific needs and objectives.

One of the main achievements of this path is the identification of key sectors in methane emission generation, such as agriculture and livestock, and the waste sector. In the former, enteric fermentation and manure management are highlighted, while in the latter, solid waste disposal, biological treatment of solid waste and wastewater treatment and disposal are emphasized.
