For Stage 1 of the work of the Waste Initiative in Penang, Malaysia, GEC, on behalf of UN Environment IETC, conducted a “City Assessment” and prepared a report on Waste and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) with analysis (2012-2013). For Stage 3, GEC conducted a pilot project for the separation and treatment of food waste for the Georgetown Heritage Area and Buffer Zone of Penang. The objective of this pilot project was to upscale organic waste diversion upstream targeting food waste separation from roadside hawker stalls, restaurants, and hotels in the UNESCO World Heritage George Town inner city on selected main streets (especially those which have night hawking) for a pilot project.
