Pilot Project for the Separation and Treatment of Food Waste for Georgetown Heritage Area and Buffer Zone, Penang - Report

This report is a part of the program to reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) by Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to implement Municipal Solid Waste Initiative with the objectives of enhancing waste management practices while reducing methane and black carbon emissions.
For Stage 1 of the work of the Waste Initiative in Penang, Malaysia, GEC, on behalf of UN Environment IETC, conducted a “City Assessment” and prepared a report on Waste and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) with analysis (2012-2013).  For Stage 2 of the City of Penang, IETC, in collaboration with the state government of Penang, developed an “Organic Waste Management Plan” and “Best Practices paper on organic waste management” (2014-2015).

For Stage 3, GEC conducted a pilot project for the separation and treatment of food waste for the Georgetown Heritage Area and Buffer Zone of Penang. The objective of this pilot project was to upscale organic waste diversion upstream targeting food waste separation from roadside hawker stalls, restaurants, and hotels in the UNESCO World Heritage George Town inner city on selected main streets (especially those which have night hawking) for a pilot project.
