Accelerating the implementation and financing of methane mitigation in the waste sector: pathways to a just and circular transition

Blue Zone; Brazilian Pavillion

Currently, the solid waste sector is the second largest source of methane emissions (16%) nationally, with the landfilling of organic waste being the main source, which places waste management at the center of this agenda.  Furthermore, at COP 29, the countries responsible for 50% of global methane emissions signed the Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration to establish sectoral targets to reduce methane from organic waste in future NDCs and concrete actions on the agenda.

This panel aims to highlight concrete actions based on Brazilian and international experiences to leverage them under the umbrella of the LOW-Methane initiative. LOW-Methane, secretariat by the CCAC, is a coalition of organizations working and collaborating on data, policies, technical assistance, and financial solutions for subnational governments and their national counterparts to accelerate the fulfillment of the Global Methane Pledge and the Paris Agreement, reducing 1 million tons of annual methane emissions from the solid waste sector well before 2030, unlocking up to US$ 10 billion in public and private investments in up to 40 jurisdictions. Based on the reflection of accumulated experience, the panel will also rethink the role of the financial sector in reorganizing the circular economy, in order to not only achieve the commitments established in the NDCs and agreements, but also to create decent jobs and local leadership in the climate agenda.
