Methane Ministerial: Keeping 1.5°C Within Reach While Strengthening Energy and Food Security

Methane accounts for 0.5 degrees of the 1.1 degrees of net warming that the world currently suffers, and targeted actions to reduce methane emissions this decade are essential to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. At COP26, the European Union and United States, with the support of over 100 countries, launched the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) to reduce anthropogenic methane emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030 from 2020 levels. At COP27, we will highlight the progress made over the past year of the GMP, and we invite you all to join us in accelerating methane reduction.

The United States and European Union are pleased to invite all countries that have endorsed the Global Methane Pledge to a Methane Ministerial on November 17 at 1500 at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in the Amon room. The COP27 Methane Ministerial will highlight new GMP country endorsements since COP26, unveil national methane action plans, showcase progress on the GMP Energy Pathway to ensure climate and energy security, and launch the GMP Agriculture and Waste Pathways to advance climate and food security. Countries wishing to attend the Methane Ministerial as observers are welcome to join.
