Upscaling community-based waste management projects through project co-development with the informal sector

Objective

This project will set up and develop models of integrating informal sector workers into organic waste management to demonstrate scalable feasibility in various countries. The project will work in three pilot locations in Bandung, Indonesia, Valparaíso, Chile, and Durban South Africa. These projects alone have the potential to divert 11,000 tonnes of organic waste from dumpsites and reduce 22,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases.

Outcomes

This project aims to achieve the following outcomes:

•    Improved capacity of informal sector and community-based groups to financially sustain their operations in mitigating methane emissions from organic waste by sharing scalable and replicable proven business models.

•    Increased government capacity to divert organic waste from landfill with inclusion of the informal sector and community-based groups.

•    A shift in stakeholder discourse on methane abatement in the waste sector towards inclusive financing for the informal sector and community-based groups.

Activities

To achieve these objectives, the project will:

•    Co-develop three business models on organic waste with informal sector and community-based groups in three global south cities.
•    Conduct a study of the financing landscape for organic waste and Nationally Determined Contributions to identify ways to fulfill and increase national ambitions on methane reduction.
•    Showcase the findings of the study showcased in three regional forums where waste pickers, community leaders and policymakers will learn about various business models of organic waste, including value chains, financial flows, viability, and opportunities of the integration of the information sector.
•    Local implementers ANARCH, groundWork, and YPBB will pilot initiatives in Durban, Bandung, and Valparaiso, showcasing how informal sector and community-based groups can divert organic waste from landfills.

•    Produce three technical publications to address challenging issues related to methane emissions in the waste sector.
