Short-lived Climate Pollutants in Countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions

A 2017 update to a 2016 background paper prepared by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) for the CCAC Science Policy Dialogue in Washington DC, March 31, 2016. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the Short-lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) relevant content in the NDCs that have been submitted to the UNFCCC. Prior to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP21) meeting in Paris, several countries publicly outline their post-2020 climate actions for mitigating global warming. These commitments, known as their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), reflects each country’s ambition towards reducing emissions, taking into account their unique circumstances. Put together, the INDCs will largely determine whether the world is on a path toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
