Outdoor air quality can vary considerably between communities, neighbourhoods, and even individual streets. Yet many places around the world still lack the information needed to understand these differences or respond to them effectively. Monitoring projects can help address this gap by providing locally relevant information that supports research and education, planning, and community decision making.

Reliable monitoring involves a lot more than sensor installation alone. Successful projects require careful planning, appropriate network design, thoughtful interpretation of the data, and effective communication with the people who will use it. This toolkit has been developed to support each of these stages.

The five modules that make up this toolkit provide practical guidance for establishing and operating an outdoor air quality monitoring network. Rather than focusing on a particular device or platform, they focus on the decisions that shape successful monitoring projects and encourage approaches that can be maintained over time.
