International Day of Clean Air for blue skies 2026 Commemoration, New York

Air pollution remains one of the most significant environmental threats to human health, causing millions of premature deaths each year.  The commemoration of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), underscores the urgent need to tackle air pollution as a critical threat not only to human health, but also to climate and ecosystems stability, and sustainable development. 

Clean Air Day 2026 will emphasize the far-reaching benefits of addressing air pollution, including stronger economic growth, job creation, and improved human well-being. At the same time, it will highlight the urgent need for action and support global progress towards cleaner cities, healthier ecosystems, healthier communities, and expanded access to sustainable energy, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The commemoration of Clean Air Day at the United Nations Headquarters is a timely reminder that effective action against air pollution requires engagement of and cooperation across countries, sectors, and institutions. 

This year’s observance will see the launch of the Global Economic Assessment of Integrated Climate and Clean Air Action, a new global analysis by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) examining climate change and air pollution together through a single economic framework. It brings together state-of-the-art climate, atmospheric, health and economic modelling to explore how a portfolio of proven solutions across energy, industry, transport, agriculture, households and waste can shape environmental, health and economic outcomes. Over time, while also considering the practical conditions that influence how quickly solutions can be implemented. 

Designed for policymakers, finance and planning ministries, business leaders, development partners and the wider scientific community, the Assessment offers a fresh evidence base for thinking about climate and clean-air action not as separate agendas, but as interconnected economic and development decisions.

The commemoration will serve to:

 

• Present the Global Economic Assessment of Integrated Climate and Clean Air Action and encourage the exchange of experiences and initiatives aimed at preventing air pollution. 
• Increase the visibility of transformative clean air actions that drive change across key sectors, while engaging citizens in dialogue on how they can contribute to cleaner air and healthier communities.
• Provide a platform for Member States to showcase their clean air policies, best practices, and success stories, highlighting the health, climate, ecosystems, and economic benefits of improved air quality.
• Strengthen global and regional cooperation on air quality solutions, accelerating progress toward sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies 2026, we call on governments, businesses, financial institutions, civil society and communities to move from commitment to action, from isolated to integrated actions, and from underestimating costs to counting every benefit. Because the question is no longer whether we know what to do, or whether we can afford to do it. The economic case has been made. The question is will we move fast enough?
