Welcome back! The Coalition has gotten off to a flying start in 2017 and we are happy to share our latest updates with you here. 

Urban air pollution and its impact on climate and health continue to make headlines, as pollution levels remain well above World Health Organisation standards in many cities around the world. As a result, an increasing number of cities are banning diesel vehicles from their centers and taking measures to control emissions of black carbon, particulate matter and ground-level ozone from the burning of biomass.

Events this month have confirmed the relevance of our work and the need for fast action. Methane was determined a far stronger climate forcer than previously thought, according to a University of Reading study. And, our partners began testing low Global Warming Potential refrigeration and cooling alternatives that will help countries reach their commitments to phase down hydrofluorocarbons under the Kigali Amendment.

This year, our challenge is to move the global commitments to reduce short-lived climate pollutants towards local solutions with big emissions reductions. We look forward to working with you in 2017!

European Union approves new rules to drastically cut air pollution

The new EU National Emissions Ceilings Directive will set stricter limits on five main air pollutants, including fine particulate matter. EU Member States must transpose the Directive into national legislation by 30 June 2018 and produce a National Air Pollution Control Programme by 2019.

Chile launches demonstration of alternative refrigeration technology

A supermarket in Chile has become the first in the country to adopt new refrigeration technology in an effort to both showcase alternatives to hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and a national commitment to more climate-friendly refrigeration technologies.

European Investment Bank analysis of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants

The EIB, one of the largest financers of climate action globally, released a report on SLCPs outlining its ambition to fine tune its climate action. In view of the substantial potential to reduce global warming in the near term, EIB has decided to raise awareness of the potential for addressing SLCPs.
